Is my donation tax-deductible? Yes. The Des Moines Police Canine Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 42-2166397), and your donation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. You'll receive an emailed receipt automatically upon completing your donation — keep it for your records.
Where exactly does my donation go? Your gift supports one of three core areas: Active Duty Gear (protective equipment and field-ready supplies), Advanced Training (certification and skills development for our K9 teams), and Retirement & Care (medical costs and care for K9s who've completed their service). We don't allocate specific dollars to specific purchases in advance, since needs and costs vary — instead, your donation goes into the category it supports and is used where the need is greatest at the time.
Does Zeffy charge any fees? No. We use Zeffy to process online donations, and 100% of your donation goes directly to the Foundation. Zeffy will ask if you'd like to leave an optional tip to support their platform — that tip is separate from your donation and is never required.
Can I set up a recurring monthly donation? Yes. When you donate through our form, you can choose to give monthly instead of a one-time gift. Monthly giving — even a small amount — helps us plan ahead and provides steady support for our K9 teams year-round.
Can I donate in honor or in memory of someone? Yes — you can dedicate your donation to someone during checkout.
Is the Foundation affiliated with the Des Moines Police Department? The Foundation was founded and is led by a volunteer board that includes active K9 handlers and officers from the Des Moines Police Department, alongside outside experts in veterinary care and canine training. We're a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that exists to support the department's K9 program through community fundraising.
How is the Foundation's money managed? The Des Moines Police Canine Foundation was incorporated in April 2026. As a young organization, we're committed to financial transparency as we grow and will make our official filings publicly available as they become due.
